What Is Structural Steel Estimating?
Structural steel estimating measures every steel member on the structural drawings — beams, columns, braces, girts, purlins, lintels and embeds — and converts them to weight by shape and length. To that tonnage the estimator adds connection material, shop fabrication hours, coatings or galvanizing, delivery, field erection labor, cranes and equipment, and bolting and welding.
A complete Division 05 estimate usually also covers open-web steel joists and joist girders, metal floor and roof deck, cold-formed framing where specified, and miscellaneous and ornamental metals such as stairs, railings, ladders, bollards, embeds and shelf angles. These smaller items are easy to miss and often decide whether a steel bid makes money.
We estimate steel for fabricators, erectors and general contractors. Steel interfaces closely with concrete foundations, masonry and the building envelope, and it is a frequent target of value engineering.

Structural Steel Estimating for Ohio Conditions
Ohio has a deep steel industry — mills, service centers and fabricators across the state — which helps availability, but steel prices still move with national markets and tariffs. Our estimates record the pricing date and basis so you can adjust for movement between estimate and buy-out.
Demand is the other variable. Large industrial, data-center and semiconductor-related projects in Central Ohio and logistics growth along the interstates compete for fabrication capacity and ironworkers, which can extend lead times and raise erection costs. We flag long-lead steel and joist packages so procurement can start early.
Erection in Ohio also has to account for winter wind and cold, which slow production and affect welding procedures, and for prevailing wage ironworker rates on public projects.
Ohio factors we price in
- Mill & service-center price movement
- Fabrication capacity & lead times
- Joist & deck lead times
- Winter erection productivity
- Prevailing wage ironworker rates
- Crane availability & permits
What Drives Structural Steel Costs in Ohio?
| Cost factor | Why it changes the estimate | How we price it |
|---|---|---|
| Tonnage & piece count | Many light pieces cost more per ton to fabricate and erect than fewer heavy ones. | Pieces and weight both tracked so productivity reflects the real frame. |
| Connections | Moment connections and complex details add fabrication and field hours. | Connection types identified and priced from the details or stated assumptions. |
| Coatings | Galvanizing, intumescent fireproofing and high-performance paints add cost. | Coating systems priced from the specifications. |
| Miscellaneous metals | Stairs, rails and embeds are labor-intensive and often underpriced. | Itemized from architectural and structural sheets. |
| Erection logistics | Crane size, site access and sequencing drive field cost. | Crane and equipment plan assumed and listed. |

Structural Steel Estimating FAQs
Do you provide steel tonnage by member?
Yes. Tonnage is reported by shape, member type and building area, with connection allowances stated separately.
Do you estimate joists and metal deck?
Yes. Joists, joist girders and deck are taken off by designation, length and gauge.
Can you price miscellaneous metals?
Yes. Stairs, railings, ladders, embeds, lintels, bollards and other misc. metals are itemized.
Do you include erection and cranes?
Yes. Erection labor, bolting, welding and crane costs are priced from the frame and site conditions.
Can you estimate pre-engineered metal buildings?
Yes. We estimate PEMB foundations, erection and accessories, and can carry the building package as a quote or allowance.
Do you price galvanizing and fireproofing?
Galvanizing and shop coatings are included in steel pricing; spray fireproofing can be estimated as a related scope.
How do you handle steel price volatility?
We record the pricing date and source so you can adjust for market movement before buy-out.
