Explained

What Is Earthwork Estimating?

Earthwork estimating calculates how much soil must be moved and how: stripping topsoil, cutting high areas, filling low areas, importing or exporting material, compacting fill, excavating for foundations and trenching for utilities. Sitework estimating extends that to storm sewers, detention, sanitary and water lines, aggregate base, erosion and sediment control and final grading.

Cut and fill volumes are calculated by comparing existing and proposed surfaces from the grading plan. Soil conditions from the geotechnical report determine whether excavated material can be reused, whether undercut is needed and whether stabilization or dewatering is required.

We estimate earthwork and sitework for site contractors, general contractors and developers. Related scopes include asphalt paving, concrete, landscaping and demolition.

Quick Answer

How is cut and fill calculated?

Existing and proposed grades are compared across a grid or surface model to calculate cut and fill volumes. Adjustments for topsoil stripping, shrink and swell, and unsuitable soils show whether the site balances or requires import or export.

Ohio Expertise

Earthwork & Sitework Estimating for Ohio Conditions

Ohio soils vary widely. Much of the state is covered by clay-rich glacial till that can be difficult to compact when wet, so subgrades frequently need undercut, stone or lime and cement stabilization. Southeastern Ohio’s unglaciated hills bring shallower rock and steeper grading. We use the geotechnical report to price these conditions instead of assuming ideal soils.

Stormwater rules add cost and planning. Sites disturbing an acre or more generally need coverage under Ohio EPA’s construction stormwater general permit, with a stormwater pollution prevention plan, erosion and sediment controls and post-construction water-quality measures. Local jurisdictions may add detention and design requirements.

Seasonal weather matters too: wet springs and freezing winters limit earthwork, and frozen or saturated soils can’t be used as compacted fill. Utility locating through Ohio 811 is required before digging.

Guide

Earthwork & Sitework Estimating Guide

Practical answers to the questions contractors and owners ask before pricing this trade.

Shrink and swell

Soil changes volume when excavated and compacted. Applying shrink and swell factors converts bank volumes to the compacted or loose volumes needed for hauling and placement.

Topsoil and stripping

Topsoil is usually stripped, stockpiled and reused for landscaping. Its depth affects both earthwork quantities and how much topsoil is available.

Trench quantities

Trench excavation depends on pipe size, depth, slope and bedding. Bedding and backfill materials are calculated from trench dimensions.

Erosion control

Silt fence, inlet protection, construction entrances, seeding and sediment basins must be installed and maintained throughout construction.
