Explained

What Is Mechanical Estimating?

Mechanical estimating covers the piped and plant-side systems that serve a building or process: boilers, chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, pumps, hydronic heating and chilled-water piping, steam and condensate, process piping, compressed air, specialties, mechanical insulation, controls, and testing and startup. It is often bid together with HVAC air-side work, but it requires its own expertise and productivity assumptions.

Pipe is measured by size, material, joining method and system, with fittings, valves and supports counted on complex runs. Equipment is priced from schedules, and labor depends heavily on pipe size, welding versus mechanical joints and installation height.

We estimate mechanical systems for mechanical contractors, pipefitters, design-build firms and owners. For air-side systems, see our HVAC estimating; for coordinated pricing across trades, see MEP estimating.

Quick Answer

How is mechanical estimating different from HVAC estimating?

HVAC estimating focuses on air-side systems: equipment, ductwork, air devices and ventilation. Mechanical estimating includes those systems plus hydronic, steam and process piping, central plant equipment and mechanical insulation — the piped systems that often dominate commercial and industrial projects.
Scope

What Our Mechanical Estimates Include

A complete mechanical scope — measured, priced and organized the way you bid and buy.

What you receive

Project Types

Mechanical Projects We Estimate

Residential, commercial and industrial work — each priced for how it is actually built.

Hospitals & Labs

Central plants, heating hot water, chilled water and steam.

Universities & Campuses

Central plant upgrades and distribution piping.

Manufacturing Plants

Process piping, compressed air and utility systems.

Data Centers

Chilled water, cooling towers and heat rejection systems.

Office & High-Rise

Hydronic systems, pumps and central equipment.

Plant Renovations

Boiler and chiller replacements in existing facilities.

Ohio Expertise

Mechanical Estimating for Ohio Conditions

Many of Ohio’s older downtown buildings, hospitals and campuses run on steam or hydronic heating, and replacing or upgrading those systems is common work in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and other cities. Renovations require demolition, phased shutdowns and temporary heat to keep facilities operating, which we price explicitly.

Industrial growth across Ohio — from manufacturing plants to data centers — drives demand for process piping, chilled water and heat rejection systems. Large projects compete for pipefitters and welders, affecting labor availability and cost.

Mechanical systems in Ohio are governed by the Ohio Mechanical Code and related standards, and public projects require prevailing wage rates for pipefitters and insulators by county.

Ohio factors we price in

Cost Drivers

What Drives Mechanical Costs in Ohio?

These are the variables that move a mechanical number most — and how we handle each.
Cost factorWhy it changes the estimateHow we price it
Pipe size & materialLarge-diameter and welded steel piping require more labor.Priced by size, material and joining method.
EquipmentBoilers, chillers and towers are major cost items.Priced from schedules or quotes.
InsulationHot and chilled systems need insulation and jacketing.Measured by pipe size and system.
Installation heightHigh or congested piping slows installation.Labor adjusted for access.
RenovationWorking in existing plants adds demolition and phasing.Shutdowns and phasing priced separately.
Guide

Mechanical Estimating Guide

Practical answers to the questions contractors and owners ask before pricing this trade.

Welded vs. grooved vs. press joints

Joining method affects productivity. Welded steel requires skilled welders and more time, grooved systems install faster, and press fittings speed up copper and stainless installations.

Central plant estimating

Central plants include equipment, pumps, piping, valves, controls and structural supports. Equipment pricing and rigging often dominate the cost.

Process piping

Process piping is specified by fluid, pressure, material and cleanliness. Testing, flushing and documentation requirements add cost.

Insulation and jacketing

Mechanical insulation thickness depends on fluid temperature and pipe size. Outdoor or exposed piping may need protective jacketing.
How It Works

How the Estimating Process Works

Trade estimates follow the same five steps as every project — with a fixed quote first. See our full estimating process.
