Explained

What Is Landscaping Estimating?

Landscaping estimating counts and measures everything on the landscape plans: trees by caliper, shrubs by container size, perennials and groundcovers, seeding and sod areas, topsoil and planting soil, mulch, edging, irrigation, hardscape such as pavers and walls, site furnishings and stormwater plantings. Each item is priced with material, installation labor, equipment and warranty requirements.

Plant schedules list quantities, but plans must be checked against them because discrepancies are common. Soil depths, mulch areas and irrigation zones are measured from the plans, and hardscape is taken off by area, length and height.

We estimate landscaping for landscape contractors, site contractors, general contractors and developers. Related scopes include earthwork and sitework, asphalt paving and masonry site walls.

Ohio Expertise

Landscaping Estimating for Ohio Conditions

Ohio’s planting seasons affect landscape schedules and costs. Spring and fall are typically best for planting, while summer heat and winter freeze limit installation and increase watering or replacement risk. Projects completed off-season may need temporary seeding, delayed plantings or extended warranties.

Many Ohio communities have landscape ordinances that require buffers, parking-lot trees and screening, and some suburbs have tree preservation or replacement requirements. Stormwater regulations increasingly call for bioretention and native plantings, which require specialized soils and plant materials.

Freeze-thaw cycles affect hardscape, so pavers, walls and base materials must be installed with proper drainage and compaction.

Guide

Landscaping Estimating Guide

Practical answers to the questions contractors and owners ask before pricing this trade.

Checking plant schedules

Plant schedules should match the counts shown on plans. Reconciling the two avoids missed or duplicated material.

Soil and mulch

Planting beds need topsoil or planting mix and mulch at specified depths. Area times depth gives volume for ordering.

Retaining walls

Segmental retaining walls are priced by face area, with base, drainage, geogrid and caps added. Tall walls may require engineering.

Establishment and warranty

Many specifications require watering and replacement during a warranty period. These costs should be included or clearly excluded.
