Explained

What Is Electrical Estimating?

Electrical estimating counts and measures everything on the electrical drawings: utility service, switchgear, transformers, panelboards, feeders, conduit and wire, branch circuits, lighting fixtures and controls, receptacles and switches, equipment connections, grounding, generators and transfer switches, and site lighting. Each item is priced with material and labor, often using labor units per device or per foot of conduit.

Feeders and branch wiring are measured by length, conduit type and wire size. Fixtures and devices are counted from plans and schedules. Large equipment such as switchgear and generators is priced from quotes and can have long lead times.

We estimate electrical for electrical contractors and general contractors. Related scopes include low voltage, HVAC equipment connections and coordinated MEP estimating.

Quick Answer

How are electrical estimates calculated?

Fixtures, devices and equipment are counted; conduit and wire are measured by size and length; and labor units are applied to each item. Distribution equipment, generators and lighting are priced from schedules or quotes, then overhead and profit are added.

Ohio Expertise

Electrical Estimating for Ohio Conditions

Electrical work in Ohio follows the National Electrical Code as adopted through the state’s building codes, and inspections are performed by certified local departments. Utility service requirements differ by provider — AEP Ohio, FirstEnergy’s Ohio utilities, Duke Energy Ohio and AES Ohio among them — so service entrance, metering and transformer responsibilities must be confirmed for each project.

Demand for electrical gear has grown with Ohio’s data-center, manufacturing and EV-related investment. Switchgear, transformers and generators can carry long lead times, which our estimates flag so procurement can begin early.

Union and open-shop electrical contractors compete across Ohio’s metros, and public projects require prevailing wage electrician rates by county.

Guide

Electrical Estimating Guide

Practical answers to the questions contractors and owners ask before pricing this trade.

Labor units

Electrical labor is often estimated with labor units — hours per device or per foot of conduit — adjusted for height, access and conditions.

Lighting packages

Lighting fixtures may be bought as a package from a distributor. Estimates should show fixture types, quantities and controls so quotes can be compared.

Utility coordination

Utilities may provide transformers or require specific service equipment. Clarifying who pays for what avoids gaps between the contractor and utility.

Long-lead equipment

Switchgear, transformers and generators may need to be ordered early. Estimates should include pricing dates and lead-time notes.
