Explained

What Is Plumbing Estimating?

Plumbing estimating measures and prices the systems that bring water in and take waste out: underground sanitary and storm piping, above-ground drain-waste-vent (DWV), domestic hot and cold water, natural gas piping, roof drains, fixtures and carriers, water heaters, pumps, backflow preventers, grease interceptors and specialties such as floor drains, hose bibbs and cleanouts.

Pipe is measured by size, material and system, and fittings are often calculated as a percentage or counted on complex systems. Fixtures are counted from plans and schedules. Excavation, backfill and trench conditions significantly affect underground costs.

We estimate plumbing for plumbing contractors, mechanical contractors and general contractors. Plumbing is often bid with HVAC and fire protection as part of an MEP estimate.

Ohio Expertise

Plumbing Estimating for Ohio Conditions

Plumbing in Ohio is governed by the Ohio Plumbing Code, part of the state’s building regulations, and installed under permits from certified local building departments. Water service lines must be buried below frost depth, which affects trench depth and cost, and many homes and buildings include basement floor drains and sump systems.

Water and sewer connections are local. Tap fees, meter requirements and backflow rules vary by municipality and water purveyor, and some suburban projects require long service runs or lift stations. We price those items from the site plan or carry clear allowances.

Pipe material prices — especially copper — can move quickly. Our estimates separate material and labor so you can update pricing before you commit.

Guide

Plumbing Estimating Guide

Practical answers to the questions contractors and owners ask before pricing this trade.

Underground first

Underground plumbing is installed before slabs and is often bid separately or early. Accurate depths, lengths and fittings are critical because changes later are expensive.

Counting fixtures

Fixtures drive rough-in labor and material. Counting each fixture type, including carriers and trim, from both plans and schedules prevents misses.

PEX vs. copper

PEX is common in residential and some multifamily projects and installs faster than copper. Commercial specifications may require copper or other materials, changing both material and labor.

Gas piping

Natural gas piping is sized for connected appliances and routed to equipment. It is easy to overlook when gas is shown on mechanical sheets rather than plumbing sheets.
