Explained

What Is Siding Estimating?

Siding estimating measures each exterior wall elevation, deducts openings and converts the net area into squares of siding. It then adds the components that make the system work: starter strips, J-channel, corner posts, window and door trim, frieze boards, soffit and fascia, house wrap, flashing and fasteners. For replacement work, it also covers removal of existing siding, disposal and sheathing repair.

Complex elevations with gables, bump-outs, multiple materials and many openings take far more trim and labor than a simple box, so accurate counts of linear trim items matter as much as wall area. Fiber cement and engineered wood also add painting or factory-finish considerations.

We estimate siding for builders, siding and exterior remodeling contractors and owners. Siding pairs naturally with roofing, doors and windows and storm work through Xactimate estimating.

Quick Answer

How do you calculate siding squares?

Measure each wall elevation, subtract window and door openings, add gable areas, and divide the net square footage by 100 to get squares. Add waste for cuts, then measure trim, corners, J-channel, soffit and fascia separately in linear feet.

Ohio Expertise

Siding Estimating for Ohio Conditions

Vinyl siding remains common on Ohio homes, alongside fiber cement and engineered wood on higher-end construction and brick or stone accents on façades. Ohio’s freeze-thaw cycles and wind-driven rain make the weather-resistive barrier, flashing at windows and roof-wall intersections, and kick-out flashing essential — and frequently underpriced.

Storm damage drives a large share of replacement siding work, and matching discontinued profiles or colors can expand the scope beyond the damaged wall. For replacement projects on older homes, we also allow for rotted sheathing and trim behind existing siding.

Cold weather affects installation as well: vinyl becomes brittle in low temperatures and fiber cement painting has temperature limits, which can shift exterior work to the warmer months.

Guide

Siding Estimating Guide

Practical answers to the questions contractors and owners ask before pricing this trade.

Vinyl vs. fiber cement

Vinyl is lightweight and fast to install with no painting. Fiber cement offers a heavier, more durable look but requires more labor, special cutting precautions and either factory or field finishing. The choice changes both material and labor significantly.

Trim drives labor

Corners, window and door surrounds, frieze boards and soffit details take more time than flat wall area. Elevations with many openings and material changes need careful trim counts.

Weather barrier details

House wrap must be lapped correctly and integrated with window flashing. Kick-out flashing where roofs meet walls prevents water damage that often appears years later.

Matching on repairs

When only part of a home needs new siding, finding a matching profile and color can be difficult. Estimates should state how matching is handled, especially for insurance claims.
