Explained

What Is Asphalt Paving Estimating?

Asphalt paving estimating measures pavement areas from the site plan and prices each layer of the specified section: subgrade preparation, aggregate base, intermediate and surface courses, tack coat and compaction. It also covers milling and overlays, full-depth repairs, curbs, pavement markings, signage, wheel stops and sealcoating.

Asphalt is typically priced by the ton, calculated from area, thickness and mix density. Aggregate base is priced by ton or cubic yard. Small or irregular areas, hand work and night or phased paving increase unit costs.

We estimate paving for paving contractors, site contractors, general contractors and property owners. Related scopes include earthwork and sitework, concrete curbs and walks, and landscaping.

Quick Answer

How many tons of asphalt do I need?

Multiply the paving area by the compacted thickness to get volume, then multiply by the mix density — typically about 110 to 115 pounds per square yard per inch of thickness — and convert to tons. Add a small waste allowance for edges and irregular areas.

Ohio Expertise

Asphalt Paving Estimating for Ohio Conditions

Ohio’s paving season is shaped by temperature. Asphalt plants and paving operations slow or stop in the coldest months, and specifications often limit placement below certain temperatures. Projects that miss the season may need temporary surfaces or delayed final courses, which we note in the estimate.

Public and many private specifications reference the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Construction and Material Specifications for mixes, aggregates and placement. Asphalt binder prices change with oil markets, and public contracts sometimes include price adjustment provisions. Our estimates record pricing dates so they can be updated.

Freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salts make drainage and base design important for pavement life across Ohio.

Guide

Asphalt Paving Estimating Guide

Practical answers to the questions contractors and owners ask before pricing this trade.

Pavement sections

Light-duty car parking, heavy-duty drive aisles and truck courts use different thicknesses. Estimates should measure each section separately rather than using one average.

Converting area to tons

Asphalt tonnage is calculated from area, thickness and density. Using the specified mix density improves accuracy.

Overlays and milling

Overlays often require milling at edges and transitions to maintain drainage and curb reveals. Measure milling separately from overlay area.

Striping and markings

Parking stalls, arrows, crosswalks and accessible spaces are counted and measured separately. They are often overlooked in quick estimates.
