What Is Bid Estimating?
Bid estimating is the preparation of a complete, defensible estimate that a contractor uses to submit a price for a project. Unlike an early budget, a bid estimate is built from the bid documents — drawings, specifications, addenda and the bid form — and must account for every scope the contractor will be held to once the contract is signed.
For general contractors, that means pricing self-performed work, carrying subcontractor scopes, adding general conditions, bonds and insurance, and checking every division for gaps. For subcontractors, it means a precise trade estimate with clear inclusions and exclusions that a GC can compare against other bidders.
Outsourcing bid estimates lets contractors pursue more opportunities without the cost of a full-time estimating department. Our estimates arrive before bid day so you have time to review, apply your markup and make the final call. Need only quantities? See our quantity takeoff services.

Winning Bids in Ohio’s Construction Market
Public bidding in Ohio follows statutory rules. Competitive bids on public improvements typically require a bid guarantee, and contracts above the prevailing wage threshold must pay the rates established for each county and trade classification. Bid forms often require alternates and unit prices that must be priced exactly as written.
Private work is more varied: negotiated GMPs for health systems and developers, competitive bids for retail and industrial shells, and design-build for logistics and manufacturing. Each one rewards a different kind of estimate, and we tailor ours to the opportunity.
Ohio’s market is competitive. With strong demand in Central Ohio and steady activity in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Dayton, contractors who can bid more jobs accurately win more work. Our bid estimates give you that capacity.
Ohio factors we price in

- Bid guarantees & performance bonds
- Alternates & unit prices as written
- OFCC & public bid-form formats
- Owner-direct purchase & tax treatment
- Winter-condition general conditions
What Makes a Bid Estimate Competitive?
| Factor | Why it matters on bid day | How we handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Scope completeness | One missed scope can turn a winning bid into a losing project. | Division-by-division scope checklists and a second-estimator review. |
| Subcontractor coverage | Comparing sub quotes on different scopes leads to bad decisions. | Scope sheets that define what each sub price must include. |
| General conditions | Percentages hide real costs like supervision, trailers and temporary heat. | Priced from the bid schedule and project duration. |
| Addenda | Late addenda change quantities and requirements right before bid day. | Every addendum reviewed and the estimate updated with a revision log. |
| Labor rates | Prevailing wage and union scales vary by county and trade. | Current rates applied by classification and county. |

Bid Estimating FAQs
Can you meet a tight bid deadline?
Often, yes. Single-trade bids can usually be turned around in 24–48 hours, and rush service is available when capacity allows. Call as soon as you receive documents so we can confirm the schedule.
Do you submit the bid for us?
No. We prepare the estimate and supporting documents; you review it, apply your markup and submit the bid under your company’s name.
Do you price public bids with prevailing wage?
Yes. We apply the current Ohio prevailing wage rates for the project county and each trade classification, including fringe benefits where required.
Can you help compare subcontractor quotes on bid day?
Yes. Our bid leveling service organizes sub quotes against a defined scope so you can choose the most complete low number.
Do you prepare bids for subcontractors?
Yes. We prepare trade bids for electrical, mechanical, plumbing, drywall, concrete, masonry and other subcontractors, formatted to the GC’s scope requirements.
What if addenda arrive after you start?
We update the estimate for every addendum received before the bid date and document the changes, so you know exactly what moved.
Do you provide plug numbers for missing sub quotes?
Yes. Every scope gets an estimated plug so you have a complete number even if a subcontractor quote never arrives.
Can you review public bid results?
Yes. We compare your bid against the published tabulation to show where pricing differed.
